The number one factor you should use in picking an attorney is how much experience they have.  In Jersey City you have plenty to pick from. It’s not enough just to find out how many years they have had practiced in all you have to go farther.  Find out how long they’ve been doing the type of case that you have and if the cases that they normally do are similar to yours.  Just be because an attorney handles divorce law it doesn’t mean that going to him or her for a book copyright case is a good idea.  You have to really understand what huge attorney specializes in that you all are interviewing.  If you don’t speak to it least three or four fully qualified attorneys you will not have an understanding of what it means to be fully qualified, even if the best one was the first one that you interviewed.  This process will also build confidence in your selection and when there are problems in the case and you have to really trust the attorney it will be easier to work with them and not try to find a new one in the middle of the case.  Once this step has been completed some of the others may fall in place.

The next thing is that your expectations and the attorneys should match.  Someone may find an attorney good and that an attorney is good for what they expected the attorney to do.  Being able to understand what to expect from the attorney and what the attorney expects from you cannot be stressed enough.  One aspect of expectations is to understand how busy an attorney is.  Since most cases proceed very slowly, you should not expect daily updates from your attorney.  If you have the understanding that you will be updated when something changes on the case then you will be a much better client.  Being a good client is the best way to have a great attorney.  If you decide to bug your attorney every day, neither of you will be very happy.

One thing that people fail to realize is no lawyer can be an expert in everything.  Having a good relationship with an attorney may cause you to think that that attorney can’t handle any case that comes up.  This is a pitfall that most people fall into, and most attorneys dread.  Hopefully this article has given you something to think about when selecting an attorney.  Always speak to as many attorneys as possible before choosing one.
